Andre Ward

Andre Ward is American WBA Super Middleweight Boxing Champion. He was born on February 23rd of 1984 in San Francisco, California, United States. He was often called the nickname “S.O.G.” which means “Son of God“. Ward was also considered as one of the best pound for pound fighter of the world.

He was generally appraised as 6th in Yahoo! Sports, 7th in Sports Illustrated, and 10th in The Ring Magazine. In 2004, Ward garnered a Gold Medal at the Summer Olympics.

Andre Ward was basically inspired by his father Frank Ward to pursue to the boxing industry. When Andre Ward was young, he was often told stories by his father about hard-fought battles and victories. Since then, Ward poured his body, mind, and soul to boxing and aimed to become a world boxing champion.

During his amateur boxing career in 1994, Ward set a record of 110 wins to 5 losses. He was an unbeatable fighter from year 1998 up to 2004, where he did not lose any single fight. He won the “Under 19 National Championship” in 2002. He was also a two-time United States National Champion in 2001 and in 2003 at the Middleweight division.


 
Ward started his professional debut in December of 2004 and made a TKO record against Chris Molina during the second round of the fight.
 
In February 2005, Ward won his second professional fight which was with Kenny Kost. Following on April of the same year, Ward won another bout via disqualification from his opponent Roy Ashworth. Furthermore, Ward continued to won another three fights, all via knockout. But on November 2005, Ward experienced to be knocked down for the first time of his boxing career. But despite of being knocked down on the 4th round by Darnell Boone, Ward was able to get back into the game and won via unanimous decision. Following that, Ward won a couple more fights including his TKO wins from Andy Kolle, Francisco Diaz, Roger Cantrell, Rubin Williams, Jerson Ravelo, and Shelby Pudwill.
 
In 2011, Andre Ward was one of the six distinct boxers who were invited to join the WBA Super Middleweight Championship.
 
During the WBA Super Middle Weight Championship Tournament, Ward was able to defeat other world champions including Mikkel Kessler, Allan Green (a substitute of Jermain Taylor who resigned from the tournament), Sakio Bika, and Arthur Abraham. For the last and final round of the WBA Super Middleweight Championship Tournament, Ward will fight against another world champion, an English man Carl Froch. The fight is scheduled to take place on December 17, 2011.

Carl Froch

Carl Froch is an English professional boxer who was rated best in super middleweight. Froch was born on July 2nd of 1977 in Nottingham, England. He was named as a two-time and prevailing WBC super middleweight champ. He was the former title holder of the Super Middleweight Champion Title of the Commonwealth, British, and English titles.

At the age of nine, Carl Froch already started playing boxing at their home in Nottingham, England. During his amateur boxing career, he had acquired in 1999 and in 2001 two ABA middleweight titles. He joined a boxing fight in Phoenix ABC located in Gedling that is near Nottingham. He also earned a bronze medal in the 2001 World Amateur Boxing Championships. Carl Froch amateur career also experienced some loss. One of his losses during his amateur career was with Denis Inkin.

March of 2002 he moved up into professional in boxing. During his professional boxing career, Carl Froch earned only 1 defeat of his 28 professional bouts. He won 20 of those fights with a knockout while the last 7 were decision victories.

Barry Hearn managed Carl Froch while Robert McCraken trained the English boxer.


 
During 2004, Forch gained the British and as well as the Commonwealth Championship titles. He has then defended his British and Commonwealth titles from fighters Tony Dodson, Brian Magee, Damon Hague, Matthew Barney, Dale Westernman, and Ruben Groenwald.
 
He fought and won an Armenian slugger Sergey Tatevosyan on November 9th of 2007 and likewise defeated a former world champion in boxing Robin Reid. After his defeat, Reid announced his retirement from the boxing industry.
 
Carl Froch was also one of those distinct boxers who participated during the Super Six World Boxing Classic for Super Middleweight Tournament that was facilitated by “Showtime“. Froch’s first opponent in the tournament was Andre Dirrell from which Froch’s WBC title going to be fought. Despite some speculations about the fight, Froch was able to defend and maintain his WBC title.
 
Mikkel Kessler was Froch second opponent. Mikkel Kessler had previously lost his WBA super middleweight championship title to Andrew Ward. This time, Froch lost the bout and lost his WBA title to Mikkel Kessler via unanimous decision.
 
Arthur Abraham was Froch next opponent. Before their match, Mikkel Kessler had announced to retire from the tournament due to an eye injury; this made a WBC title vacant from which Abraham and Froch are going to battle with. Determined to regain his WBC title, Froch fought his best during their fight and won via unanimous decision.
 
For the semi-final stage of the tournament, Froch fought over Glen Johnson who was a veteran boxer who had defeated the world class boxer Roy Jones Jr. Despite an undeniably good fight from both fighters, Froch dominated the match and won over Johnson. This makes Froch to advance for the last and final stage of the tournament. For the finals of the Super Six Boxing Tournament, Carl Froch will battle against Andre Ward who is an Olympic Gold Medalist.

Bernard Hopkins Jr.

Bernard Hopkins

Bernard Hopkins is a professional American boxer. He was born on January 15th of 1965 with the full name of Bernard Humphrey Hopkins Jr. in Pennsylvania. He is quite popular with the nicknames B-Hop and the Executioner.

Currently, Hopkins is the Light Heavyweight Champion of both the Ring Magazine and likewise the WBC. He was proclaimed as the oldest fighter to have ever won a world title when he beat Jean Pascal on their bout on May 2011. He was aged 46 during that time he defeated Pascal through a unanimous decision and has surpassed the previous record of George Foreman.

Bernard Hopkins was a former world well-acknowledged world middle-weight champ. He was the first boxer to have retained his four world titles and likewise his “The Ring” belt during the same fight. He had defended his world middle weight championship title for 20 times and thus has been considered as one of the greatest world middle weight boxer of all time. He was ranked as number 3 by The Ring Magazine lists’ of the last 50 years Top 10 Best Middleweight Title Holders. Bernard Hopkins Jr. has also a minor share of the Golden Boy Promotions.

During the earlier life of Hopkins, he was involved with a number of crimes which some of them led him to get imprisoned. Hence, it was during his stay in the prison that he discovered his passion for boxing.


 
He started his boxing career professionally as a light heavyweight boxer but lost his debut fight to Clinton Mitchell on October 11th of 1988 during their fight at Atlantic City located in New Jersey. He resumed his boxing career 16 months later as a middleweight boxer and unanimously won the bout over Greg Paige. He first won his fight on February 22nd of 1990 in Blue Horizon.
 
From February of 1990 to December 1992, Hopkins made a record of 21 wins with no lost. Sixteen of those bouts were won by KO, 12 of them through a first-round knockout. However, his unbeatable record broke when he lost his fight with Roy Jones Jr. during their first bout.
 
Some of his awards and achievements include: (2001) Fighter of the Year by the BWAA, The Ring, The World Boxing Hall of Fame, World Middleweight Champion Longest reign, Most Title Defense as World Middleweight Champion by 20 title defenses. Other recognitions he acquired are the following:

  • Oldest Fighter in the boxing history to hold a World Middleweight Title
  • Oldest Fighter in the boxing history to hold a World Lightweight Title (which has surpassed Archie Moore)
  • Oldest World Champion in the boxing history (which has surpassed George Forman)

Benny Leonard

Benny Leonard

Benny Leonard or Benjamin Leiner was an American Boxer in the Lightweight division. He was born in New York, United States on April 17th of 1896. Being born and raised in the lower east side of Manhattan in New York, Leonard learned fighting within the Jewish Ghetto. Leonard was nicknamed by the crowd as Ghetto Wizard and The Great. He was ranked by the Ring Magazine as Number 8 of the “Top 80 Best Fighters of the Last 80 years” and was ranked as “ESPN’s 50 Greatest Boxers of All-Timerank 7. Leonard was also featured in the Top Ten Best Boxers of All-Time.

The Ghetto Wizard was compared to Muhammad Ali who was the boxing Champ at that time. During their generation, it was baseball and boxing that was considered as the most popular sport in the United States of America. And being part of those sports was greatly considered as an honour since people joining it should have the talent and skills.

During his prime, he was known greatly for his speed and superior technique and reflexes in boxing. Leonard was known also by many to have a powerful punch and has earned 70 knockouts from his 183 wins. He only lost 19 fights and had a draw in 11 of his matches. It was usual during his time that there were several no-decision matches and thus he was involved in those matches to which was believed to have reached about 213 fights.

Other than fighting as a Lightweight Champ, Benny Leonard also challenged the Welterweight Champion Jack Britton for the title in June 26th of 1922. However, Leonard lost his fight to Britton due to disqualification of hitting Britton when Britton was already down on the thirteenth round.


 
Leonard won his fights from great champions such as Johnny Dundee who was the Featherweight champion of 1922, 1923, 1924 and Junior Lightweight champion of 1921 up to 1924. He also defeated Freddie Welsh who was the Lightweight champion of 1914 to 1916, Rocky Kansas who was the Lightweight champion of 1925 to 1926, Willie Ritchie who was the Lightweight champion of 1912 to 1914, and Johnny Kilbane who was the Featherweight champion of 1912 to 1923. Other great boxers Leonard fought include Pasty Cline, Joe Welling, Ritchie Mitchell, Lew Tendler, and Charley White.
 
He beat all the best fighters in the lightweight division during his time and has defended his title ever since 1917. He had retired at 1925 still holding his title as the Lightweight champion.
 
In 1931, Leonard returned to the boxing career when the stock market crashed. He won straight all of his 18 fights and had 1 draw. Leonard finally retired when he lost his fight with Jimmy Mclarnin.
 
He had since then, after his retirement, became a popular referee up until he had a heart attack in the ring from which he died at 51 years old a day after his birthday.
 
Benny Leonard has a boxing record of 85 – 5 – 1 with 69 knockouts and 121 no – decisions.

Archie Moore

Archie Moore

Archibald Lee Wright or famously known as Archie Moore was one of the world’s best light heavyweight boxing champ during 1952 to 1959, and likewise during 1961. He was considered as one of the longest to play in the professional boxing career and was famously known as “The Old Mongoose“.

He was born on the 13th of December of 1916 in Benoit, Mississippi but was later raised at Missouri. Moore started his boxing career in 1935 and had 9 fights to which 5 of them were won and lost 4. He was also nicknamed as the “Fourth of July Kid“, which means that he might have more than 9 fights.

Moore began his professional boxing career in 1938 and won 11 of his 12 fights. He had 8 fights in the following year and won 5 of it, lost 2, and had 1 no contest with Jack Coggins. Moore toured in Australia in 1940 in which he won all of his 7 fights (6 of them were knockouts). After his tour in Australia, Moore had a match with Pancho Ramirez to which he won by knockout in just 5 rounds but he lost to a 6-round decision to Shorty Hogue.


 
Archie Moore was considered as one of the greatest boxers in boxing history to hold the most number of knockouts as he has 131 knockouts in total. He ranks at number 4 in the 100 Greatest Punchers of All-Time by The Ring magazine and was recognized as the Greatest Pound-for-Pound boxer in the boxing history by BoxRec.
 
He was described to have a unique and distinct move in boxing. He was also the thought as one of the boxers who had the longest stay in boxing career. When he reached 48, he was recognized as the oldest Light Heavyweight champion of all time. He was then previously from the middleweight division but then he moved to light heavyweight, hence he continuously proved his worth to be called as a boxing champ and did not waste his fights in his whole career in boxing.
 
At 39 years old, Moore got his Light Heavyweight Championship and held on it for almost 10 years. At 42, he tried to rise from Lightweight up to Heavyweight and tried to steal the championship from Marciano. But Moore lost to Marciano in the 9th round.
 
Archie Moore was considerably one of the greatest boxing icons in history. He won most of his total fights of 220. He was an important icon for the Black American Community and has involved himself in African American causes. Moore also entered the showbiz industry and became a successful actor in both film and television. Archie Moore died at the age of 81 on December 9th of 1998 in his home in San Diego, California.
