Born on September 1st of 1923 with both Italian parents who migrated from Italy to America, Rocco Francis Marchegiano or famously known as Rocky Marciano was an Italian-American Heavyweight champion boxer during 1952 up to 1956. Rocky was also known in many nicknames such as “The Brockton Blockbuster” and “The Rock from Brockton“. He was the only person in the boxing history to defend and hold his title for six times and has been undefeated throughout his boxing career.
As long as boxing is concerned, Rocky Marciano was definitely one of the boxers who was able to land the hardest punches and who was likely the only heavyweight champ to be undefeated. And although Marciano’s punches were not that smooth like other boxers were, he has great power punches that made up for it.
Most of the debates that lasted for decades were about Marciano being called by a lot of people as the greatest boxer in the history for having no loses; however, boxing critics has never ranked Marciano a high score despite the fact of being undefeated. Why? Basically, it might be for the reason that most of his competitions faced were not really as strong as those with Ali or such as Robinson. Robinson and Ali have beaten other great boxer in the Hall of Famers. So simply being undefeated was easily considered as null. A lot of great boxers were once undefeated boxers for quite a long time. These great boxers are such as Willie Pep who had once 61 wins and 0 loses, Sugar Ray Robinson who had once 85 wins and 0 loses as an amateur, while attaining 40 wins to 0 loses as a pro. The only time where these boxing champions were defeated was when they fought all time legends as well.
Hence, Marciano had fought most of the biggest names in boxing that was already past their prime. So basically it was not that good to build up such reputations. He took the heavyweight title from Jersey Walcott who was then 38 years old. It was also widespread that he had knocked-out the once famous Joe Louis; however Louis at the time was already old, not in that good shape and was only fighting for the sake of paying his debts. On the other hand, Robinson beat Jake LaMotta while Ali beat Foreman and Fraser – these fights has then held them on the prime of boxing.
Unluckily for Marciano, he never got his chance to have a legendary fight to prove his worth in the boxing hall of fame. Nevertheless, Rocky Marciano will always be remembered for being a fierce boxer with no losses. Rocky Marciano had 49 Wins, 43 of which were knock outs, and no loses.
