Roy Jones Jr. is an American Boxer that is known to be the only boxer in boxing history to have began his boxing career in the junior middleweight and have continued to move up to the heavyweight, to which he won a heavyweight title. Jones was born on January 16th of 1969 in Pensacola, Florida. He is widely called in nicknames “Junior“, “Superman“, “RJ“, and “Captain Hook“.
Jones is considered as one of the best boxers worldwide and was marked in the history of boxing when he won the World Boxing Association (WBA) heavyweight title and became the first former middleweight champ who won the heavyweight title in 106 years. He also earned seven belts in boxing at the same time. He was named by the Boxing Writers Association of America for the 1990′s as the Fighter of the Decade.
He was thought by many to have a great force of nature in his boxing stance. He has also won awards such as the Golden Gloves and the Nations Junior Olympics. However during 1988, Jones was given a silver award instead of a gold medal in the Olympic because of corrupted judges. Those judges were later on suspended due to the bias decisions though. As compensation, he received an award of the Val Barker Trophy as the best stylistic fighter in the Olympic Games. Due to the infraction that occurred, a new Olympic scoring system was then implemented to prevent further biases in the scoring.
Before Jones went professional in boxing, had already sparred various professional and skillful boxers which includes the NABF Champ Ronnie Essett, the IBF Champ Lindell Holmes, and also Sugar Ray Leonard. Jones started his professional career path in boxing after defeating Ricky Randall in May 6th of 1989 in just 2 rounds. In his following fight he fought the more experienced boxer Stephan Johnsons whom he beat him in 8 rounds by a knockout.
He awed the crowd by winning all of his first 17 fights by a knockout, and most of them only by just a few-round span. He became a new star in the boxing league starting then.
Roy Jones beat Bernard Hopkins in Middleweight and James Toney in Super Middleweight, earning him the title for both in different association in boxing. During the 90′s, Jones showed the crowed how great he was at his prime, showing how fast and strong he was in boxing that no one could beat him.
During 2003, Jones moved up into the Heavyweight division which he beat John Ruiz for the Heavyweight title of the Wold Boxing Association. He was just then 34 years old but had already accomplished all he needed for his legacy.
Hence, a time finally came when Jones has finally proved that he is still human after all. Although he won his first fight with Tarver, he later lost his following two fights which included his fight with Joe Calzaghe.
And although Roy Jones Jr. is not obviously the same boxing fighter as he was before, he still nonetheless continued to prove his worth in the world of boxing and is still up to now not retired.
